Rainforest Defenders<\/h1>\n

We manage and protect 916 hectares of forest (9.16 km2) in the\u00a0 Las Piedras river basin,\u00a0 province of Tambopata, Madre de Dios. This area was granted in concession for 40 years (renewable) by the Peruvian state in 2006.<\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner el_class=”col-12 col-md-6″ width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]Since the construction of the Interoceanica Highway (2011) these areas of primary forest or virgin forest are being threatened by illegal logging, agriculture (monocultures), and other activities that lead to deforestation and loss of the forest. Our permanent presence with forest rangers protects the area and promotes the spread of information about the importance of conserving the forest in\u00a0 the neighboring communities.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner el_class=”col-12 col-md-6″ width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]We have built our biological station with materials from the forest (cabines for living quarters, dining room, kitchen, bathrooms, surveillance tower) in a natural infrastructure that houses our entire operations team. We also have a boat to navigate the river, a well and pump for groundwater, a biodigester, a backup generator set, and a photovoltaic system for the use of solar energy. In this place there is no telephone signal, public lighting or electricity, we have limited internet but the best thing is that here you are connected with the forest!<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section css=”.vc_custom_1626736828419{background-image: url(https:\/\/arbioperu.e2tinet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/mapa.jpg?id=20468) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_row el_class=”container”][vc_column][vc_row_inner el_class=”col-12″][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space height=”200px” el_class=”d-md-none”][vc_empty_space height=”500px” el_class=”d-none d-md-block”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_class=”template-text-content background-white”][vc_row el_class=”container”][vc_column][vc_row_inner el_class=”row”][vc_column_inner el_class=”col-12″][vc_column_text el_class=”body-2-column”]We have 16 km of trails and circuits which follow interesting routes. Along these routes you can find centuries old trees protected by us, viewpoints, and collpas (clay licks), and places where mammals feed. We protect large Amazonian trees which are calculated to be between 100 and 1000 years old. They\u00a0 have been identified, \u00a0geo-referenced, and systematized in a data base so\u00a0 the forest can be monitored. Our intention is to\u00a0 take care of them due to their incalculable contribution to the ecosystem, not only because of the\u00a0 tons of carbon which they have accumulated, but also for providing a nesting\u00a0 place for several species of birds, a home for thousands of insects, refuge, and food source for\u00a0 mammals and other wild animals. They fulfill a fundamental roll in the water cycle as they each draw around a thousand liters daily from the subsoil to the atmosphere, promoting cloud formation by evapotranspiration. You can be a defender of the Forest!<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner el_class=”row”][vc_column_inner el_class=”col-12 col-md-6″ width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]ARBIO Peru was created to protect these 916 hectares. In 2012 we created an online System of Protection of Hectares\u00a0\u00a0to support these activities financially. This allows anyone to be a Defender of the Forest by protecting a hectare annually for US$55. Since 2018 we have also been working on a System of Protection of Large Amazonian Trees because they are threatened by illegal logging in the river basin. Due to the Forest Inventory carried out from 2016 to 2017 identification and information was obtained on 300 trees belonging to species at risk of\u00a0 illegal logging. Thus\u00a0\u00a0 a platform was designed so that these large trees can be protected by anyone in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
